Gangnam is not a destination that ends with Gangnam Station. Accommodations and appointment locations are spread out widely, such as Seolleung, Samsung, COEX, Nonhyeon, and Sinsa, so choosing only the fastest train from the airport can make the final trip longer.
From Incheon Airport to Gangnam: Transfer to Hongik University Station Line 2
It is a one-transfer route that only uses railways. When transferring to Line 2 at Hongik University Station, it is safer to check on the electronic board whether it is heading toward Sinchon or Gangnam rather than using vague expressions such as “inner line circulation.”
1. Take the Airport Railroad regular train to Hongik University Station.
From Incheon Airport, take the regular Airport Railroad train and get off at Hongik University Station. The direct train does not stop at Hongik University Station, so it does not fit this route.
- Incheon Airport → AREX regular train → Get off at Hongik University Station
2. Transfer from Hongik University Station to Line 2 toward Sinchon/Gangnam.
Follow the “Line 2” transfer sign inside the station, and then take the train that goes towards Sinchon, Jamsil, and Gangnam rather than the opposite direction of Sinchon and City Hall. There is no additional transfer from Hongik University Station to Gangnam Station because it is the same main line as Line 2.
- Follow the “Line 2” sign to the transfer passageway
- Board after checking the electronic display board for Sinchon, Euljiro Entrance, Jamsil, and Gangnam.
- Get off at Gangnam Station
3. Choose the Gangnam Station exit according to your destination.
The direction of Shinnonhyeon and Kyobo Tower on the west side of Gangnam-daero is near exits 10 and 11, and the intersection of Gangnam Station and the commercial district on the east side of Gangnam-daero are near exit 11. For exact stores and accommodations, please double-check on the map based on the address as there are many exits.
- South of Sinnonhyeon/Gangnam-daero: towards exit 10 or 11
- Gangnam Station Intersection/Highway: Direction to Exit 11
Decide before departure
First decide on the exact station of your destination, such as Gangnam Station, Seolleung Station, or Samseong Station, and save the hotel address on the map. In the Gangnam area, there is a lot of walking between stations and exits, so if you have a carrier, you should also compare walking distances and crosswalks.
Subway routes vary depending on departure time, size of luggage, and travel speed of companions, even for the same destination. Enter your departure station and exact destination address into the map app, and compare routes with different numbers of transfers and walking sections instead of just looking at the recommended route.
How to read recommended routes
After entering Seoul from Incheon Airport, you will compare routes combining the airport railroad and the city subway. Where you transfer at Seoul Station, Hongik University Entrance, etc. may vary depending on your destination and time zone, so check the route for each transfer station in the real-time directions.
When looking at the sign at the station, check the line color and number first, and after arriving at the platform, be sure to check the next station and destination one more time. Even on the same route, if you take a train in the opposite direction, travel time increases significantly.
Points to save time in the field
At large stations in the Gangnam area, exit selection determines final travel time. Enter the building name of your accommodation, company, or event venue, and save in advance which exit is closest to your arrival station.
Especially at large transfer stations, it is quicker to stop briefly and check the signs and map app rather than just following the direction people are moving right after getting off. Instead of looking for directions in front of stairs or escalators, move out of the way and check.
In this case, change the path
During weekday rush hours, Gangnam-bound trains and transfer corridors can be crowded. If you need to go straight to an appointment after a flight delay, prioritize routes with fewer connections and extra time.
If there are significant on-site variables such as construction, events, rain, or commute times, the usual shortest route may not be the most convenient route. If the last train is close or an appointment time is important, save alternative transfer stations and taxi pick-up locations in advance.
Pre-departure checklist
If you save the items below before departure, you will avoid having to search again in a hurry at the station.
- Building name/address of destination in Gangnam area
- Trains available after arriving at the airport
- Total travel time by transfer station
- Arrival station exit and accommodation check-in information
Please give priority to official guidance on the day.
This article explains the criteria for choosing a route. Train operations, fares, last trains, exit construction, and elevator operations may change, so please check the real-time route on the map app, station electronic displays, and official guidance from the operating organization before actually boarding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the fastest route from Incheon Airport to Gangnam Station always the same?
No. It depends on your flight arrival time, train queues, congestion and the exact location of your destination. Compare real-time routes for the day.
If you have a large suitcase, what should you prioritize?
It's better to compare the number of transfers, stairs, and walking to your accommodation first, rather than a route that's a few minutes faster.
