How to read NYC subway ridership numbers

This list totals, by station, the estimated hourly ridership that the MTA calculates from payment data and publishes. Keep in mind these are estimates rather than actual turnstile counts, and use them as a reference.

Total vs. daily average: know the difference

Total monthly ridership is the sum for the entire month, while the daily average divides that total by the number of days actually recorded. Because gaps in the source data mean some stations are only tallied for 29–30 days instead of 31, the daily average is a fairer basis for comparing stations than the raw total.

Rankings are provided both system-wide and within the borough. Ridership can vary widely between stations even in the same borough, so use whichever ranking fits your purpose.

Hub stations combine several lines into one figure

Stations where multiple lines meet, such as "Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority Bus Terminal," report the combined ridership of all those lines together. The number does not show the crowding of any single line by itself.

This is not real-time crowding

These figures are totals and averages calculated over a full month, and they do not guarantee real-time crowding during rush hour or on any specific train. Actual crowding at the time of your visit can vary by time of day and day of the week.
