How to read NYC subway elevator & escalator info
This list organizes, by station, the equipment-level availability and outage-history data the MTA publishes every month. The exact installed location of equipment (which entrance, which level) is not included in this data, so check separate signage to confirm location.
Station names combine multiple lines into one
The NYC subway publishes statistics for stations where multiple lines meet as a single "station complex." For example, a station like "161 St-Yankee Stadium (B,D,4)," with several lines listed in parentheses, may actually have equipment in different locations per line. Confirm your destination line and the actual platform location with on-site signage.
If multiple pieces of equipment are registered at the same station, they may connect different entrances or levels. The equipment code in the search results (starting with EL or ES) is an identifier for each unit and does not indicate the exact installed location.
Availability and outage counts are for the most recent month
24-hour availability is the share of the month's total hours the equipment was working normally; AM/PM peak availability is calculated separately for rush-hour periods only. The monthly total outage count combines scheduled outages (routine maintenance) and unscheduled outages (breakdowns).
A low availability figure or high outage count does not mean the equipment is broken right now. Conversely, equipment with high availability could suddenly break down today. These figures show a recent monthly trend, not real-time status.
Check MTA official channels for availability right now
This data does not include today's real-time outage, inspection, or construction information. If elevator or escalator access is essential, check real-time status on official MTA guidance (mta.info) before you leave, and prioritize station staff guidance and signage once on site.
If you are traveling with a wheelchair, stroller, or large luggage, or have a tight transfer window, it is worth planning an alternate entrance or route in advance. If equipment is out of service, you can ask the nearest station booth about alternate routes.
